Lesson #3: I don't need a cell phone

I don't need a cell phone.

After nearly 10 years of carrying around a telephone I have spent the last few months with no cell phone in my pocket. I really haven't missed it. Of course, during the time I faithfully carried one I had no house phone so it was definitely a neccessity, but now I have a home phone with voicemail. There's really no need for me to be contacted anywhere else that I might be. I'm not a healthcare professional or a drug dealer.

I don't need to be reached in the grocery store.

I don't need to be reached at the movies.

I don't need to be reached at the doctor's office.

I have a phone at work.

I have walked into public restrooms and heard people in the stall talking to someone and that just doesn't make any sense to me. Folks on the toilet have other things on their minds. Either they or trying to drop some science or maybe get a date if you happen to be a certain senator.

I admit that it's a convenience when traveling, especially if you happen to drive a raggedy car that is subject to breaking down on the side of the road, but I'm a New Yorker at the moment. My car is the Metropolitan Transit Authority. If she breaks down, I don't have to call anyone. I just need to sit patiently until the problem is corrected. Which is why I don't leave the house without something to read.

After figuring out that cell phones have been the cause of countless automobile accidents, there are now laws that mandate that drivers must have hands-free accessories. However, folks are now walking down the street using their hands-free apparatus. Y'all look crazy as hell! There used to be a time when you saw someone carrying on a conversation with no one in particular, you would cross over to the other side of the street or find some way to avoid them all together. It's becoming increasingly more difficult to tell the sane from the insane. I can't tell who is crazy or who is just talking to their mama on the phone. That disturbs me.

Bottom Line: I just don't want to be that accessible anymore.

However... Caller ID is A MUST!

how'd folks live without caller id's? I can definitely understand the cell phone thing. I have one and I rarely answer it any way. But I don't have a home phone, so I gotta keep up with it

ummmm Iam not home alot.
I do not have a home phone!
I don't have a stable internet connection.
I need to be contacted incase of emergencies.
I am on the road often going vast distant places.

Because of these factors many people have phones to stay available to the ones that need to be in touch with them, not necessarily being work! If not for you, I have used the phone for someone else's convenience! I won't part with my phone! Good luck to you on your no phone quest!~

You are so funny for that last paragraph...but I so feel you on this. I decided I didn't need both phones, so I got rid of the house phone.

It's less about me being accessible and more about me being able to catch up with folks when I'm on the go...I am not however, one of those people that MUST speak into a headset as I walk down a NY street!! I think they look friggin crazy too!

I don't have caller ID. I'm old school. I've only had my cell phone for a little over six months and I got it so I can be a good supervisor and my troops could get a hold of me.

Happy New Year.
