I'm sitting here looking out my window at the tip of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, this sliver of moon that God clipped from a fingernail and hung in the sky and thinking of what a wonderful afternoon I had yesterday with one of my favorite bloggers.
We had planned to meet at 1:30 in the Financial District near his campus. We were both late. Me, because the trains are foolish on the weekends. Him because he was, admittedly, in the mirror. Though I'd never laid eyes on him, I knew him immediately for several reasons.
1. He was in the area that we agreed to meet
2. He was the only other black man in the immediate area
3. He looked as I'd imagined
We hugged and walked. We laughed and talked. We shared. He was everything I imagined and so much more. We hugged and parted.
I can't begin to express how much the meeting meant to me. I was almost star struck and I am NEVER THAT, but I have been reading this man-child's work since discovering him and he never ceases to amaze me with his observations and accounts of his experience. Not to mention I think he is one of the most gifted writers to come along since... well... me (when I'm really on).
I believe there was a ripple somewhere in the universe yesterday when our energies converged. I am so grateful for the opportunity to share space with this delightful young man and learn directly from him how to live with a little more dignity and grace.
I do not doubt that our meeting was divinely ordered and that life will be richer for the both of us as we learn from each other. I invite all who stop by this spot to read about and bask in his teenage years and pray for our collective future.
